Main differences in a GMP and standard shredder for the pharma industry

Although both machines come with the same shredding chamber size and throughput the basic differences in both models are as follows

GMPSTD
All SS except essential parts like Housing and Stand Frame (Internal Functionality)All parts MOC is various types of standard steel, except body panels and Hopper are in SS (External looks)
SS Control PanelPowder coated Control Panel
Screw Conveyor – Silent operation for separationVibrator Sieve (compact design) for separation
Advised for Wet MaterialsGood for Dry Materials
With all documentationWithout Validation

Why does a pharma manufacturing unit have to buy a GMP shredder ?

Whether a shredder must be GMP-compliant depends directly on what it is shredding and where it is located within the facility:

1. When a GMP Shredder is Mandatory

If the SHREDALL shredder comes into direct contact process rejected waste, it must meet full GMP requirements:

  • Rejected Batches & Expired Drugs: Destroying off-spec tablets, capsules, or active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
  • Blister Packs & Primary Packaging: Shredding packaging that directly touches the drug product.
  • Cleanroom / Controlled Area Placement: Machinery located inside processing zones must meet strict environmental and hygienic standards.

Key Technical Differences in a SHREDALL GMP Shredder:

  • Materials of Construction (MOC): Full Stainless Steel (SS304/SS316) for contact parts to prevent corrosion, rusting, or chemical reaction. Standard shredders often use painted mild steel.
  • Cleanability & Hygiene: Smooth, crevice-free surfaces with rounded corners to prevent powder or dust entrapment between batches.
  • Dust & Containment Control: Closed chambers and dust extraction points (often HEPA-compatible) to prevent fine active powders from escaping into the environment or cross-contaminating other areas.
  • Validation & Traceability: Supplied with complete IQ/OQ (Installation/Operational Qualification) protocols, material test certificates, and calibration records required for audits.

2. When a Standard Shredder is Sufficient

Not all shredders in a pharmaceutical plant need to be expensive GMP models:

  • Secondary / Outer Packaging: Destroying corrugated cardboard boxes, shipper cartons, and outer paper sleeves.
  • General Office Waste & Labels: Shredding administrative paperwork or non-contact records outside production areas.
